Following several cryptic teasers on social media, indie developer Funselektor, the creator of the acclaimed Art of Rally and Absolute Drift, has unveiled its next game: Over the Hill.
It follows Golden Lap, a retro-style racing management game inspired by 1970’s Formula 1 released last September. Like Golden Lap, Over the Hill is being co-developed with Strelka Games.
Whereas Funselektor’s recent titles have focused on specific motorsport disciplines (drifting, rally and Formula 1), Over the Hill is a free-roaming exploration game where you drive across challenging terrain in rugged off-roaders from the 1960s to the 1980s. In other words, you’ll be driving lots of vintage Land Rover lookalikes.
Vehicles can also be equipped with tools to aid your adventure, with the trailer showing a vehicle stranded in a raging river being towed to safety by a winch.
From valleys to steep mountain hills, each biome is inspired by real-world locations with beautiful scenery, day-and-night cycles and weather effects providing an “dynamic, immersive experience.” Up to three friends can join your journey in cooperative multiplayer, creating a sense of adventure, or you can explore on your own.
Portals scattered around the environment unlock new areas to navigate and there are also collectables, objectives and offroad trail challenges to discover. Like Art of Rally, Over the Hill sports a charming, minimalist art style, which Funselektor is renowned for.
“After having developed several games about motorsport, we wanted to go off-track by offering players a vast world to lose themselves at a slower pace,” said Funselektor’s Founder, Dune Casu.
“In a way, this game is similar to the experience I’ve had journeying across North America in my trusty camper van. There’s something special about being in the wilderness in the middle of nowhere, from the peace, the sounds of nature and less distraction from the civilised world. I hope this game can really drive that feeling home.”
Over the Hill is expected to launch “later this year” on Steam, but a release date and console availability is yet to be confirmed. It marks Funselektor’s fourth car-focused game, following Absolute Drift, Art of Rally and Golden Lap.
Like Funselektor’s previous titles, Over the Hill’s minimalist presentation oozes charm. There’s a lot of potential for it to be a casual alternative to simulation titles like SnowRunner and Expeditions: A MudRunner Game.
