American Truck Simulator developer SCS software gave its hugely passionate community a massive fright on Friday (31st January 2025).

The Czech studio published a YouTube video titled ‘Reaching the End’, but far from being a portent of doom, it was simply a teaser of the game’s next batch of content.

The video shows a big rig pulling out of a layby, firstly revealing a tranquil countryside setting but more importantly a road sign reading ‘End Historic US Route 66 296 Mi’.

This almost certainly means that Illinois will feature in ATS’ upcoming DLC plans, considering it’s the only State to feature Route 66 that isn’t already in-game. Illinois is also the eastern endpoint of the historic highway, ending in its most populated city, Chicago.

Route 66 is 2,448 miles long and terminates in Santa Monica to the west. It also incorporates the States of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, all of which are available as DLC packs for ATS.

Route 66 was established in 1926 and contributed to increased trade thanks to its truck-friendly asphalt, also allowing a speedy economic migratory route during The Great Depression.

Ghost towns

The highway became romanticised in film and literature in the ensuing decades but has since lost its grandeur thanks to wider modern highways, leaving many so-called ‘ghost towns’ along its path, some of which are re-created in ATS.

SCS already has the States of Louisiana, Missouri and Iowa in progress for ATS, with the Prague-based team also aiming to complete its huge California Rework project soon, so there’s plenty of life left in the game yet, which will no doubt please its vast virtual trucking community.
