Embracer Group continues its aggressive expansion today (18th August), entering an agreement to purchase physical collectors-edition producers Limited Run Games.

Limited Run Games is a North Carolina-based start-up, an offshoot of games developer Mighty Rabbit Studios, that began by publishing physical editions of indie games in 2015 for the PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation 4 that otherwise were only available digitally.

Since then, it has also expanded onto PlayStation VR, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch releases, the vast majority in limited quantities aimed at collectors or those who believe in the preservation of games should digital stores lose licences or cese to exist.

For racing and driving game fans, Gearshifters, #DRIVE, Absolute Drift: Zen Edition, Drive!Drive!Drive!, Jak X: Combat Racing and Star Wars Episode I: Racer have all received the Limited Run Games treatment.

It announced earlier this year that it was to produce a line of Xbox physical games for the very first time. The company has also created its own Carbon Engine technology that ports retro games to modern platforms.

“We see opportunities for Limited Run to further grow their business with the Carbon Engine by bringing back classic games, and extend their footprint geographically through synergies with other companies within Embracer Group”, says Lars Wingefors, CEO of Embracer Group.

The exclusive game publisher will continue to operate as an independent subsidiary with Josh Fairhurst (CEO) and Douglas Bogart (COO) continuing to lead the company under the newly formed operative group “Embracer Freemode.”

Embrace Group is now gigantic. It owns the teams behind Milestone (Hot Wheels Unleashed, MotoGP, Ride, SBK 22), Dakar Desert Rally, Redout 2, MX vs ATV Legends and Wreckfest.

Let’s hope the acquisition enables further physical releases of unique racing games in the near future.
