There’s a new low-poly arcade console racing game in town, and its name is Pixel Driver.

Developed by independent Swedish studio Pretty Fly Games, Pixel Driver was released for PC via Steam last month (April 2023), developing a reputation for fast-paced action combined with colourful graphics.

Pretty Fly Games is no stranger to the retro-themed racing genre, having also been responsible for 2021’s Total Arcade Racing, so aims to deliver similar high-speed thrills with its latest release.

Players take control of one of 10 unlockable vehicles, driving through busy, traffic-laden streets with the goal of surviving as long as possible without crashing.

When the end does inevitably arrive, your car will explode into tiny pieces – along with any other unfortunate traffic caught up in the accident – providing a satisfyingly chaotic ending to proceedings.

Players collect coins in each procedurally generated stage to unlock new cars, with fuel pickups required to keep your vehicle on its path toward total destruction. Those with quick enough reflexes can compete for a position at the top of the online leaderboards – no mean feat in such a fast-paced and challenging game.
