Le Mans Ultimate’s concurrent player record has just been broken.

During the sim’s crucial 24 Hours of Le Mans test races, SteamDB reported 11,941 concurrent players on Saturday 24th October at around 5 PM BST, up nearly 3,000 from the previous best.

LMU custodian Motorsport Games organised two 24-hour events around the Circuit de la Sarthe to test the game’s netcode after implementing a new reliable UDP (RUDP) system in July’s V1.4 update.

However, a series of high-profile network issues forced a rethink, and the team rolled back to the older Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), with this weekend’s two events a crucial step toward affirming RUDP’s robustness going forward.

Thankfully, early stability reports are mostly positive, with the second event in progress at the time of publication.

Brake problems

However, Friday’s event, which began at 11 AM UTC, was plagued by brake problems for several players, as brakes simply failed without apparent warning late into the race. With no way to judge brake wear in-game on the fly, LMU admins disabled it for Saturday’s race start.

It is hoped that MSG implements a brake-wear HUD in the future, especially as disc and pad changes are a key facet of real-world endurance racing.

A driver notifications issue also affected 260 players but was apparently resolved in the early stages of the race. This would likely have caused problems for those scheduled to start the event, as they didn’t receive an invitation to join the race server.

The increase in player numbers is an encouraging sign for the game, with several thousand drivers signed up to race in both Special Events across Hypercar, LMP2 and LMGT3 classes.
