One of the many new features added in Gran Turismo 7’s v1.29 update is the ability to race against Gran Turismo Sophy, the super-realistic AI opponent developed by Sony AI in collaboration with Polyphony Digital.
Alongside a rebooted Grand Valley circuit, five new cars and PlayStation®VR2 implementation, v1.29 arrives with four GT Sophy events to sample, featuring some super-savvy AI opponents.
Our very own John Munro sampled three of the events at Tsukuba, Trial Mountain and Suzuka, assessing whether Sony’s ‘autonomous racing AI agent’ can exhibit human characteristics in wheel-to-wheel combat.
Another aspect of GT Sophy is the emoticons displayed above every AI opponent’s car, offering an ongoing indicator of their ‘feelings’ mid-race. Trying a ‘bump and run’ overtake may result in a bit of angry AI retribution, so it’s wise to tread carefully…
Does battling GT Sophy feel like racing against human opponents? And does it offer enough of a challenge for hardened racing game fans? Watch John engage GT Sophy in a vehicular tête-à-tête and judge for yourself!
