New open-world sandbox racing game Wreckreation announced

A new open-world arcade racing title was announced during the 2022 THQ Nordic Digital Showcase on Friday (12th August 2022). This new title, Wreckreation, is a sandbox world filled with racing, track creating, and maybe a little bit of destruction in the process.

Three Fields Entertainment will be developing the game, and if you got Burnout vibes from the trailer, that’s no coincidence. Alex Ward, Fiona Sperry and Paul Ross are the founders, and all three previously worked with Criterion Games on the Burnout series before starting this company up in 2014.

It then went on to make Dangerous Golf, Danger Zone, Danger Zone 2 and Dangerous Driving.

Vast editable sandbox

The map that was on display during the announcement, named Sledgehammer County, is a 400,000-square kilometre (150,000-square mile) open-world setting where players will be able to create their own tracks, sometimes on the fly, and share the experience with other friends while doing so.

At first glance, it looks to have a lot of Burnout, Trackmania, and even Forza Horizon vibes going on here.

Using a free camera, you can create your own ‘world’, or tracks, with jumps and loops placed as you please. It all sounds like a map editor but on a grander scale.

Traffic volumes, time of day and weather are also on the ingredients list.

Play the hits, DJ

The premise is about creating a personalized racing experience, like a pick and mix sweets section but for driving games. The map is your MixWorld, you are the GameDJ, and there are a number of MixMode game types to get mixed up in.

Car customisation will be part of the ‘mixology’, thanks to paint colors, finishes, wheels, boost flames, engine sounds, glass colors, tires, brake lights and transmission type being selectable.

16 radio stations will be included alongside the option of playing your Spotify Premium natively, and for the full Burnout-era vibe, billboards are present, but in three types analogous to PR Stunts in Forza Horizon 5:

  • Ad Breaks – just billboards to break for fun
  • Promotional Stunts – require a special Stunt to break
  • Wrecktaculars – track your biggest Stunt score as you hit them

Score chains

It looks as though there will be scored valued for certain aspects of the experience to become a “Wreckord Breaker”, those being things like Drift, Air, Near Miss, Oncoming, Stunt, Crash and Fastest Time.

Eight-player online multiplayer will also be present, although it’s not clear at this stage in what form.

Wreckreation release date

There are still a lot of questions surrounding the new title, and there’s also been no release date announced yet either. Pre-orders are up, however, for those looking to get ahead of the curve, but only through this Amazon link at present.

Wreckreation will release soon and can be wishlisted now for Windows PC and Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
