The boxer bark is set to hit BeamNG.drive soon, if a recent teaser is anything to go by.
A recent Tweet (Xeet?) by the Germany-based game studio showcased a brutal-sounding exhaust note, with a bare chassis attached to a boxer-style engine.
The sounds are unmistakably those created by a ‘90s/’00s Subaru rally car, the inspiration for the game’s Hirochi Sunburst. Coincidentally, the Sunburst is receiving a rework and could be in Beam NG’s next update., perhaps with the new audio.
A boxer engine has its cylinders laid flat (hence the ‘flat four’ moniker) and opposed to each other, with the opposing cylinders ‘punching’ towards and away from each other with every turn of the crankshaft.
Due to their layout, boxer engines help achieve better weight distribution in cars as well as reduce vibrations. These advantages are mildly offset by the extra cost to build them, with a distinctive exhaust often the end result.

Porsche successfully uses flat-six engines to create high-revving masterpieces, while Subaru’s raucous flat-fours were a boy racer’s favourite in their Impreza Legacy heydays.
The rally link could be relevant as BeamNG has already teased an expansion of its Rally mode, with a new stage apparently previewed. An enhanced building tool and a new drift track could also form part of the game’s next update.
