The Gran Turismo franchise has surpassed 90 million copies sold. The astronomical figure has been revealed as part of a 25th Anniversary campaign and is accurate up to 16th November 2022.
The inaugural Gran Turismo was launched in 1997, initially in Japan and then in 1988 in the Western world. It sold over 10 million copies and was the best-selling game overall on the original PlayStation.
In the 25 years since there have certainly been ups – Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec – and lows – Gran Turismo 6 – but even at its nadir, it still sold in the millions.
As a live service spin-off, solid sales figures were not released for 2017’s Gran Turismo Sport, but a documentary-style video for the upcoming artificial intelligence programme Gran Turismo Sophy revealed that it had hit over 14 million users by February of 2022.
Individual sales for figures for Gran Turismo 7 were masked within this overall stat, but it did top sales charts upon launch and has remained a fixture ever since.
Developer Polyphony Digital quotes a total series sales figure of 80.4 million of 5th May 5 2018. So that’s nearly 10 million copies of GT Sport and Gran Turismo 7 sold in the last four and a half years.
“I don’t think there are many video game franchises in the world that have continued for 25 years with the same title, and with the same team,” said creator Kazunori Yamauchi on the PlayStation Blog.
“The founding members of the company are still working on the front lines, and I am thankful and proud that all 200 of our staff are a team that have the same motivation and love that the company started with in the beginning.
“In the last 25 years, the cumulative sales total of the series has reached over 90 million copies as of November 16, 2022.
“We have [a] newfound determination to continue our progress into the future with a strong sense of purpose.
“We appreciate all of your support over the last 25 years. Thank you.”
