We get to drive a car with a storied past in this week’s Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races, with Race A playing host to the Ferrari F40: the final car officially signed off by founder Enzo Ferrari.
Races B and C stick to the tried and tested Daily Races formula with Gr.3 and Gr.4 races respectively, visiting legendary European venues Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring.
You can find GT7’s Daily Races in the game’s Sport Mode, offering online ranked racing where you will be placed within events based on your previous performances.
Race A
The Ferrari F40 was designed to celebrate the Italian manufacturer’s 40th anniversary, with the car the last to be given Enzo Ferrari’s official seal of approval. As such, the mid-engined, driver-focused supercar holds a special place in the hearts of Ferrari fans worldwide (including me, it was my favourite car growing up, leading to several F40 Bburago models).
But the car isn’t just famed for its provenance – it’s also one of the finest drivers’ cars of the last few decades, providing a visceral experience thanks to its relatively low 1,300kg kerb weight and 471bhp twin-turbocharged V8 engine.
The F40 dispenses with fripperies like carpets and door handles, with windows made from lighter polycarbonate as opposed to glass, all in the pursuit of performance. Arguably, however, the car’s looks are the main event, with a slinky wedge-shaped body wrapped in iconic Rosso Corsa paint.
Race A takes place at Grand Valley’s Highway 1 layout, with the sunshine-soaked coastline suiting the F40 down to the ground. Thanks to the use of hard sports tyres grip is at a premium, so it’s best to short-shift where possible to minimise wheelspin once the F40’s turbos spool up.
Recommended car: Ferrari F40 ’92 (Legend Cars, 1,350,000 Credits or free rental)
Race B
It’s a well-worn road in Race B, as Gr.3s and Spa-Francorchamps are on the agenda. Although GT7 players have seen more than enough of this combination it’s unarguably a winner, with Spa being a mecca for GT3 racing thanks to the 24 Hours of Spa endurance race.
Maximum commitment is required through high-speed corners Eau Rouge/Raidillon, Puhon and Blanchimont, marking Spa as a proper drivers’ circuit. Coupled with technical sections like the Les Combes/Malmedy/Bruxelles complex Spa is a tricky balancing act between speed and control.
Our car of choice is the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3, which is currently available as a free gift thanks to its prominent position in the new Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story movie.
Recommended car: Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 ’18 (Brand Central, 450,000 Credits or free rental)
Race C
Race C hosts a Gr.4 pitstop battle at Nürburgring’s Grand Prix layout, with tyre strategy thrown out the window with a 1x multiplier in play. Well, I say pitstop battle…
There is no mandatory pitstop in Race C, with players only required to use hard tyres. You can choose to either stick it out on track managing fuel and rubber, or dive for the pits and switch to the quicker mediums.
Fuel consumption is seven times the normal rate, meaning players will need to keep one eye on their fuel gauge for the duration of the nine-lap race. Setting your fuel mixture to lean will help, but this needs to be balanced against staying ahead of the pack.
Lifting off the gas ahead of braking zones, plus short-shifting through the gears will help save fuel… or you can take the easy way out and dive for the pits…
Our car of choice is the Jaguar F-type Gr.4. It’s not the most economical of cars thanks to its thirsty V8, but it is the quickest on this occasion. Alternatively, selecting a six or four-cylinder Gr.4 car will extend your fuel range to a more comfortable level.
Recommended car: Jaguar F-type Gr.4 (Brand Central, 350,000 Credits or free rental)
