Even though we’re now five years into the current generation, it’s not uncommon for new games to launch on last-generation consoles. This is true for Codemasters’ F1 games, with last year’s game launching on PS4 and PS5 simultaneously. But will F1 25 change this trend and skip PS4 this year?

Despite being over a decade old, the PlayStation 4 remains a popular, budget-friendly console with a vast library of games. With over 117 million units sold, it’s Sony’s second best-selling console behind the almighty PlayStation 2.

F1 25 is expected to arrive this year on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but will PS4 owners be left out? Here’s what we know so far about F1 25 on PS4.

Will F1 25 be on PS4?

EA’s sports games are often released on both PS5 and PS4. This was the case for F1 24 and the more recent EA Sports FC 25. There are exceptions, however: EA Sports WRC was a current-gen exclusive, releasing on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, as was NHL 25 and EA Sports College Football 25.

Since Formula 1 has an enormous global fanbase, we’re expecting F1 25 to launch on PS4 and be accessible to the widest possible audience, but nothing is confirmed yet. Ultimately, it may depend on whether F1 25 has a new game engine under the bonnet.

Since 2010, Codemasters’ proprietary EGO engine has powered every F1 game alongside the Dirt and Grid games. While it’s based on old technology, it has continually evolved over the years to meet modern standards.

It’s easy to adapt for multiple systems, making a PS4 release more likely if F1 25 runs on the same engine as last year’s game. If F1 25 introduces a new game engine, it will likely be designed with modern hardware in mind to take the visuals and physics to the next level.

If F1 25 comes to PS4, there will inevitably be a drop in visual quality and performance on the less capable hardware. Other than that though, F1 25’s feature set should be on par with the PS5 version. It will also have the advantage of being cheaper than its current-gen counterpart.

EA has officially announced F1 25 with a reveal trailer set to drop on 26th March, so we should find out if this year’s game is coming to PS4 soon.

F1 25 expected release date

Codemasters and EA have yet to confirm F1 25’s release date, but we’re expecting it to arrive in May at the earliest or later in the summer based on previous games.
