The modern-day reboot of Tokyo Xtreme Racer continues to speed towards its Steam Early Access release later this month, with developer Genki offering up another teaser of the game’s extensive car customisation mode.
Footage of a Suzuki Swift Sport with a full Kuhl Racing body kit appears to confirm that TXR will give players access to a ton of interesting and fully licensed aftermarket body parts, as previewed by the developer in earlier videos.
Kuhl Racing is a Japanese company specialising in designing and manufacturing aftermarket body kits for cars. The video above shows its 33R-SS Aero Kit fitted to an in-game Suzuki Swift Sport (2022), replete with upgraded front, side and rear diffusers; rear half spoiler and wing; front grille, fog lamp and eye line attachments, plus a new reversing camera shroud.
It makes the car look like it’s going 100 mph at a standstill and certainly whets the appetite of those pining after PlayStation 2-era car games like Midnight Club, Juiced and – of course – TXR.
Judging from early previews, TXR will retain similar gameplay to its series predecessors, with players tasked with racing against computer-controlled characters on the nighttime expressways surrounding Tokyo, skilfully avoiding slower AI traffic in the process.
Tuning, modifying and car collecting form a large part of gameplay, with Genki signing multiple licensing agreements with car manufacturers and aftermarket car part suppliers including Blitz, Impul, Enkei and C-West, among many others.
Tokyo Xtreme Racer release date
TXR will be released on 23rd January 2025 via Steam Early Access. While a release date for the final version is yet to be confirmed, Genki estimates the Early Access period will last “approximately four months,” hinting at a possible May 2025 release window.
Genki will gather player feedback during the Early Access period to make improvements, with additional storylines, cars and rival characters planned for the final game.
