Epic Games has announced that its Fortnite-based Rocket Racing title will no longer receive themed updates.
Rocket Racing, which is based on Epic-owned developer Psyonix’s Rocket League, was released in December 2023 but immediately faced criticism from players due to its overpriced microtransactions and overcomplicated driving mechanics.
In a recent blog update, Epic has now confirmed the end of major themed updates for the game, which has previously received officially licensed NASCAR tracks, cars, banners and decals.
Despite this, Rocket Racing will remain playable, with Epic assuring fans new Quests, Ranked periods and Car Items will be added in future. Epic also made a point of highlighting that user-made tracks will continue to be added.
Perhaps signalling the beginning of the end for Rocket Racing, its player base has declined dramatically over the last 10 months, beginning with a peak of 625,683 players on launch to 12,079 over the last 24 hours. Although these are numbers most hardcore sims can only dream of, they still represent an alarming drop.
