Way back in May this year, we revealed that publishing/developing giant EA would release a new Need for Speed game in 2022.
Using information taken from the company’s Q3 2022 Earnings Call, it was suggested that the 2022 calendar year would see EA release F1 22, as well as new entries in its Madden NFL, FIFA and NHL franchises. To date, all these games have either been released or been given a release date (NHL is confirmed to debut later this month).
The odd one out is therefore Need for Speed (NFS), and we have good reason to suspect that its announcement is imminent (EA subsequently confirmed the game’s existence and have scheduled a live broadcast on Thursday to reveal more details – see bottom of article).
Firstly, the official NFS Twitter account underwent a rebrand yesterday (3rd October 2022), featuring a bold new logo and font.
Then there was a less-than-subtle tweet from EA’s Twitter account, asking the Need for Speed account “you think they’re ready, @needforspeed?” prompting excitement from fans of the franchise.
With the game known to be in development, the question remains, will it release before the end of the year as per EA’s Q3 2022 Earnings Call?
What we do know, however, is that the new NFS will be developed by EA-owned Criterion Games, after the British studio formally absorbed Codemasters Cheshire earlier this year. This comes after EA’s $1.2billion takeover of Codemasters in 2021.
Does this mean the first all-new console NFS since 2019’s Need for Speed Heat will mimic Criterion’s previous NFS games – Hot Pursuit, Most Wanted and Rivals? Hopefully, it will not be too long before we find out.
New Need for Speed game confirmed
Update: since we published this article, EA has announced it will reveal more details on its new Need for Speed game this Thursday at 8am PT/4pm BST/5pm CEST during a Reveal Premiere event.
The broadcast will take place on the Need for Speed YouTube channel.
