Criterion Games is now called Criterion: a Battlefield Studio, and with it confirms a sole focus on Electronic Arts’ first-person shooter.

As reported by Phil Iwaniuk for IGN at a tricennial celebration for the British Studio, VP & GM of Battlefield Studios Europe, Rebecka Coutaz, stated: “We’re not here to talk about the past” and “We are solely focused on Battlefield.”

Burnout Paradise End

The Guildford outfit was acquired by EA in 2004, and is perhaps best known for creating the rambunctious Burnout racing game series, before being shifted onto Need for Speed, right up until that franchise’s most recent entry, 2022’s Unbound.

Since then, however, it has been working on Battlefield 6, and evidently will continue to do so.

More Burnout stories

This is perhaps not a shock if you’ve been following personnel changes, although admittedly, not many do so.

Several of the team members who worked on NfS Unbound moved to Fuse Games when it was founded by its former VP and GM of Criterion, Matt Webster.

That team is now working on Star Wars: Galactic Racer, a game that we felt had overtones of Burnout upon recent testing. Both Webster and Kieran Crimmins, Creative Director at Fuse (and on Unbound), recently spoke to Traxion about how that deal came about through connections with Lucasfilm, after Criterion was drafted onto Star Wars: Battlefront.

The Need for Speed franchise, meanwhile, was last discussed by EA in 2025, when it touted it would return in “new and interesting ways.”
