Legendary Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 confirmed for Tokyo Xtreme Racer

Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 in Tokyo Xtreme Racer

After a 17-year hiatus, Tokyo Xtreme Racer is making a surprise comeback next year. As with previous games in the series, the reboot sees you race an assortment of JDM cars across the Tokyo Expressway at night.

Since the Tokyo Xtreme Racer reboot was announced in August, developer Genki has gradually drip-fed new car reveals over the last few weeks, most recently confirming the Toyota GR86 RZ. Now, a new teaser confirms that the legendary Toyota Corolla Levin GT-Apex (AE86) is joining the Tokyo Xtreme Racer car list.

Drifting enthusiasts will be familiar with the rear-wheel drive Japanese sports car. The Toyota Corolla AE86 is best known as the hero car in Initial D, often seen sliding down twisty mountain roads. Thanks to its prominence in Initial D, it’s one of the most iconic cars in drifting culture. However, the version in Tokyo Xtreme Racer is the Levin variant, not the Trueno variant with pop-up headlights made famous in the popular manga series.

This is the third confirmed Toyota in Tokyo Xtreme Racer following the MkIV Supra and GR86. Other confirmed cars include the Nissan Skyline GT-R V-spec II and Mazda RX-7.

Subaru Impreza WRX STi teased

As is customary with these car showcase videos, the trailer ends by teasing the next car to be revealed. Although its identity is hidden in shadows, it appears to be a second-generation Subaru Impreza WRX STi, judging from the headlights.

The first entry in the series since 2007’s Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2 (known as Kaido Racer 2 in PAL regions) on PlayStation 2, Tokyo Xtreme Racer is set for a PC-only release on Steam in 2025, but a release date has yet to be confirmed. Hopefully, it won’t be long until we see Tokyo Xtreme Racer’s JDM cars in action in official gameplay footage.
