In a shock move, popular streamer and two-time F1 Esports champion Jarno Opmeer has found a new home at Red Bull Sim Racing.
The Dutchman had left his position at Mercedes-AMG Petronas Esports at the end of July bringing an end to a successful spell with the Stuttgart marques that culminated in both the F1 Esports (now known as F1 Sim Racing) drivers’ and constructors’ titles in 2021.
Red Bull had announced the departure of Josh Idowu earlier in July (who later signed with Alpine), seemingly freeing up a berth for Opmeer, who will join the Milton Keynes-based team’s incumbent F1 Sim Racing World Champion Frederick Rasmussen in a stellar lineup.
Opmeer, who has real-world Formula 4 and Formula Renault experience, seems like a perfect fit for Red Bull given his personable online presence and undoubted pace.
It will also be interesting to see if the relationship extends to participating in sim events alongside Red Bull’s three-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen, given the Red Bull link between the Dutchman’s Team Redline esports outfit.
