Gran Turismo 7’s August update reworks suspension and adds four cars

The new v1.20 update file for Gram Turismo 7 is ready for players to download now. As we explained yesterday, it features three brand new cars and three new circuit layouts for Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

In addition, as we reported earlier this month, the Christian Dior-themed DeTomaso Mangusta with accompanying race suit has also made it into Polyphony Digital’s PlayStation exclusive racing game (technically, this adds a fourth car to the update, as the Dior Mangusta is separate to the standard variant).

Naturally, however, there is more to GT7’s August update than just cars and tracks, so let’s take a look at what else Kaz and the team have been working on.

Dior adds a touch of glamour to Gran Turismo 7 with new livery and full race suit

Reworked suspension physics and tyre model

Polyphony Digital (PD) has made changes to the way a car’s differential works under deceleration in GT7. To sample it in action, you will first have to buy the Fully Customisable LSD (limited-slip differential) from the Tuning Shop.

The diff controls how much understeer or oversteer the car has under braking or while coasting, the extent of which can be controlled in the car set-up menu. We’ve written a little about this already in our front-wheel-drive set-up guide

Suspension geometry has been overhauled too, which should – in theory – provide a noticeable difference in vehicle dynamics. The way tyre wear is displayed has also come in for improvement, with the wear versus heat ratio adjusted to help show a clear indicator of remaining tyre life. Handy for those Daily Races with 10x tyre wear…

Mechanical damage and Performance Points adjustments

PD has also changed the way mechanical damage manifests itself in-game (this only works when mechanical damage is set to ‘Light’ or ‘Heavy’). Some cars have also had minor Performance Points (PP) adjustments, although no information on the exact cars has been released yet.

New Scapes location: Canadian Rockies

A new scenic Scapes destination has also been added to the game, with the Canadian Rockies accounting for 30 new scenes. What better way to show off your Datsun road car than with a ruggedly mountainous backdrop?

TWO EXTRA CAFÉ MENU BOOKS

‘Extra’ Café Menu Books don’t involve racing but instead are purely car collecting based. If you purchase the three cars on an Extra book, you unlock an award. If you already own the cars by chance, then simply visit these books upon launching the game and claim your prize.

Two more Extra Café Menu Books arrive with this 1.20 update.

Other Improvements and Adjustments

1. Physics Simulation Model

 - Adjusted the suspension geometry;

 - Adjusted the simulation for tyre heat generation and wear ratio. This adjustment makes it easier to see the remaining tread;

 - Altered the simulation of the differential gear (with a Fully Customisable LSD). As a result, it’s now more effective when decelerating and provides a much smoother driving performance;

 - Adjusted the Performance Points (PP) of some cars;

 - Changed the conditions for mechanical damage occurring from a collision or contact if ‘Mechanical Damage’ is set to ‘Light’ or Heavy’ in the race settings.

2. Controllers

 - Adjusted the performance of the wireless controller.

3. Sound

 - Adjusted the sound effects so that it is easier to hear the difference in sound between Stage 1 to 3 of the ‘Weight Reduction’ modification.

4. Legend Cars

 - Legend Cars (Hagerty Collection) prices have been revised based on real-life valuations from Gran Turismo partner, Hagerty.

Hagerty provides valuations and vehicle insurance for classic cars and has sponsored some historic car events in recent years.

New prices will be applied the next time a vehicle goes on sale. The next price revision is scheduled for November 2022.

5. Race Screen

 - Fixed an issue wherein the ‘Weather Radar’ on the ‘Multi-Function Display’ would not function properly in event races with weather and time set.

6. Others

 - Various other issues have been addressed.
