Euro Truck Simulator 2’s much-vaunted Coaches mode has moved one step closer to release, as developer SCS Software unveiled extensive gameplay footage.

First revealed over a year ago, ‘Project Coaches’ puts ETS 2 players in the driving seat of a series of large buses and tasks them with transporting passengers in a timely – but safe – manner.

Success depends on how satisfied passengers are with your driving, with the game’s map altered to include a plethora of uprated bus stations.

So far, the Volvo 9700 Double Decker and the Scania Touring coaches have been previewed in-game, with the new gameplay footage focusing on the MAN Lion’s coach, the third vehicle to be showcased.

“Coaches are significantly more spacious than trucks,” stated SCS’s Senior 3D Vehicle Artist, Vitalii, “and [they] inherently contain a lot more geometry and detail… We really had to figure out new approaches to keep the visual quality high while ensuring polycounts remained low,” he explained, highlighting the difficulty of balancing visual detail and game performance with the new Coaches mode.

“We’ve paid close attention to the atmosphere inside the coaches… Players might notice intricate details on the interiors and passenger areas that really bring the space to life,” he stated.

Although the footage is of a work-in-progress build, the new mode looks to be in a fairly advanced state of development, although the external sounds of the MAN do sound a tad rougher than you’d expect from its 12.4-litre straight-six diesel engine.

ETS 2’s Coaches DLC is available to Wishlist on Steam now, although a release date has yet to be revealed.
