The Last of Us, The Witcher and Fallout. Three video game franchises that have successfully been adapted to the small screen. Hollywood has also caught on to the phenomenon, which is why films like Minecraft, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Uncharted made it to the cinema.
But let’s not talk about Borderlands, it makes me feel queasy.
However, another video game series is apparently set for the silver screen treatment if recent reports are to be believed, with Michael Bay slated to direct an upcoming OutRun film.
According to Deadline, in-demand actor Sydney Sweeney is lined up to co-produce a movie based on Sega’s classic racing game, which dominated coin-operated arcades in the mid-’80s thanks to its blend of fun gameplay, impressive graphics and immersive, cockpit-style cabinet.

It’s difficult to envisage an engaging OutRun movie plot, but if it faithfully sticks to the video game’s ‘lore’, we’ll see a Ferrari Testarossa being driven at high speed through several glamorous locations. And with Michael Bay onboard, something’s definitely going to explode.
Of course, The Need for Speed and Gran Turismo racing game franchises have already received the Hollywood treatment (with varying degrees of critical and commercial success), but what could be next?
How about: ‘rFactor 2: The Movie’, where the main protagonist tries to join a server but spends the three-hour run time ‘updating packages’? Take my money!
