Global football governing body FIFA has chosen Rocket League as the platform of choice for the next FIFAe World Cup, it has been announced.
The FIFAe World Cup has run since 2004, with a combination of remote and arena-based events used to decide the winning nation. All instances of the tournament have been played using EA SPORTS’ FIFA football games up to 2023.
However, for 2024 EA and FIFA’s license agreement ended, and with no immediate video game replacement FIFA has opted to showcase Psyonix’s Rocket League during its global esports competition.
Rocket League is already an established entity in the esports world, with its football-crossed-with-cars conceit making it easily understandable yet difficult to master. Rocket League events are huge in the esports world, regularly attracting prize pools in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, with top esports outfits like G2 and FURIA drawing in huge crowds to on-site LAN events.
16 nations will select their best Rocket League players for the FIFAe World Cup, using region-specific tournaments or qualifying procedures to decide their lineups. If you’re interested in being selected for your country sign up here to receive more details.
