  • AC EVO’s initial free-roam map size will be 70km2, and will increase in future updates
  • Initial area will include Adenau and the Nürburgring Nordschleife’s perimeter roads

The first stage of Assetto Corsa EVO’s free-roam mode will drop on 9 December 2026, alongside update V0.10.

However, at this weekend’s SimRacing Expo, Kunos Simulazioni Co-Founder and Executive Manager Marco Massarutto revealed that the initial map size for this release would be 70 km2, or ‘bigger than Manhattan,’ as he described it in an interview with Traxion.

“The first area will of course include the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Nürburg, Adenau, Müllenbach and all the villages that are close to the Nürburgring,” stated Massarutto in a live address to the Expo audience.

“The first area… will consist more or less the size of Manhattan,” he explained, citing New York’s most densely populated borough.

This slice of the Eifel region will also include all the perimeter access roads of the Nordschleife, so motorsport fans can drive to all the best spectator, camping, and parking areas around the track they’ve perhaps visited in real life, as demonstrated by YouTube driving star Misha Charoudin.

Procedural generation

The whole free-roam area will eventually expand to 1,600 km2 (with around 400 km of drivable roads), with off-road routes, AI traffic, changeable weather, and multiplayer (up to 30 players, according to Massarutto) set to launch. Impressively, 90% of the buildings in the game’s free-roam map were meant to be procedurally generated, but Massarutto says that figure is now 60%, which means a lot of extra work for Kunos’s artists.

“So the buildings are also procedural [like the roads and environment] because we can’t recreate all the buildings like they are in the real world, but they are placed through an editor into the map,” he said, highlighting Kunos’s proprietary terrain tools that analyse and interpret LiDAR data and automatically reproduce it into a tangible form in-game.

“If modders want to create a map [as big as the Eifel region], the idea is that in the future we’ll make available the same terrain system also to the modders.  So that, for example, the guys who made the Transfăgărășan course in Romania [an Assetto Corsa mod by SIM TRAXX], they could use the system to implement the same area also in EVO.

“This is our dream,” he concluded.
