Combining talents from NASCAR’s international footprints, the eNASCAR International iRacing Series will make its return in 2022. The reinstated series will have backing from D-BOX Technologies and Digital Motorsports this year. Races will take place for five consecutive weeks on Saturdays, live on eNASCAR.com/live, starting at 12 p.m. EST / 5 p.m. GMT.
Following the premature end to the eNASCAR Pro Invitational iRacing Series with the NASCAR Cup Series stars, the international talents from the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, NASCAR Peak Mexico Series, NASCAR Pinty’s Series, and select drivers from NASCAR’s 2021 Drive for Diversity class took the eNASCAR pro spotlight. International and Drive for Diversity standouts battled across a trio of road courses on the iRacing service in a three race limited series in the middle of 2021.
As it makes its return in 2022 with two more races on the scheduled than last year, the same three international NASCAR series and members of the 2022 Drive for Diversity class will make up the roster. Last season saw Simon Pilate from the Whelen Euro Series take the de facto title with the most points scored through the season. Pilate, along with both Agustin Canapino and Leonel Pernia from the Peak Mexico Series, were victorious last year.
This season, many of those drivers and more will return to the fold. Of the new entries, Alex Tagliani headlines the list with a number still yet to be determined. The majority of the roster will be made up of Whelen Euro Series drivers.
Only the Daytona Road Course returns from the 2021 limited series, as both COTA and Brands Hatch were not added back. Instead, the series picks up two oval races, one at Homestead-Miami to open the year and one at Phoenix Raceway to close it out. Races at CTMP, Zolder and the aforementioned Daytona Road Course will fill the meat of the schedule.
Last season, drivers competed using the NASCAR Xfinity Series Class B vehicles. While a car hasn’t been announced for this returning series, I still have to wonder if this could lead to the addition of the various cars driven in these three international series. It’s not NASCAR, but the Stock Car Brasil cars are to be added to the iRacing service at some point, so it’s definitely a possibility that we could see a Pinty’s, Peak, or Whelen car at some point down the road.
It’s notable that both D-BOX and Digital Motorsports are stepping up to back the series in 2022. Both entities are huge in the world of sim racing technologies. Also, the time change will hopefully bring in a wider audience from Europe. Last season, races started at 11 p.m. BST, quite late for many over there to enjoy. Now with races at 5 p.m. GMT, it might be a tad early for those in the Americas, but overall should be better for more people to tune in.
