Wreckfest gets a PS5 native version with a suite of updates

Wreckfest on PS5

A few weeks ago, we reported on the March Tournament update for Wreckfest. After the release of this patch, the Xbox Series X could then play the game at 60 frames per second – which was warmly received. However, we posed the question about a similar upgrade for PlayStation 5 users.

Now, our questions have been answered, and then some.

On 1st June 2021 there will be a dedicated PS5 version of Weckfest released. Not only will it run at 4K and 60fps, for smoother visuals, it also adds a suite of PS5-specific updates.

From a visual perspective, every facet of the game will be updated. This includes dynamic dirt that will be added to the vehicles as you play through races, higher resolution textures, increased amounts of foliage, god rays, improved shadows and particles, plus new environment lighting. Skidmarks, you’ll be pleased to hear, have also been revised. No, not that kind…

Online, there is now scope for 24-player lobbies – up from nine – while the speed of the SSD will be utilised for rapid loading times. Finally, the lovely DualSense haptic feedback will be implemented.

This sounds much more than a frame rate bump, more like a remastered version of the game. To clarify, developer Bugbear Entertainment stated that in comparison, the Xbox Series X is simply playing the Xbox One version at a higher frame rate.

As part of the re-launch, Wreckfest will be getting a new SKU for PS5, with digital and retail versions launching for $39.99 / €39.99 / £34.99. Existing PS4 owners of the game can upgrade to the enhanced version for $9.99 / €9.99.

We can’t wait to jump back in to Wreckfest on the latest Sony console and we’ll be delivering our hands-on impressions as soon as we can.
