The Codemasters rally game development team has been disbanded, and a follow-up for EA SPORTS WRC has been cancelled – this means, for the first time in decades, there is no longer a racing game being created at the historic Codemasters Southam location. Sad.
This recent news brings to an end a gaming dynasty, starting with Colin McRae Rally in 1998, then through the Dirt series and finally, the first and last EA SPORTS WRC.
While the WRC gaming series will live on with an all-new title by an unnamed new developer, the core Codemasters rally team is over.
Codemasters still exists, in one form, the dedicated F1 game studio in Birmingham, and it will release EA SPORTS F1 25 later this month – although there’s no word yet if it has successfully extended its deal for F1 games beyond this year.
