- Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown releases 12th September 2024
- Over four years since the first announcement
- Early access for pre-orders
During a Nacon Connect stream in July 2020, a new derivation of the Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown formula was announced.
It would “keep the DNA of the game” while being “more in line with current trends”, according to Creative Director at Kylotonn, Alain Jarniou – the charismatic car enthusiast who was also Game Director on 2011’s Test Drive Unlimited 2.
Each year since, there would be successive trailers and delays, eventually leading to the first true gameplay footage three years later. We would go hands-on with an early build at Gamescom, a few months later, with a 2024 release window pencilled in.
“Certainly, there’s a depth to the physics and car set-up options you’d expect from a track racer such as Forza Motorsport, not a Forza Horizon rival,” we said back then.
At last, the definitive date is set:
12th September 2024
Repeat, this is not a drill. Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown will be released on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 12th September 2024.
Those who pre-order the digital edition are set for early access on 5th September 2024.
Hong Kong-set car MMO
Developed by French studio KT Racing, Solar Crown is set on a 1:1 recreation of Hong Kong Island, with licenced vehicles and dynamic conditions.
It is set to be an online multiplayer title that evolves as a live service, which is perhaps why the latest trailer follows a player at the peak of their powers in ‘2028’, before going back in time to 2024 – possibly indicating just the long-term nature of the gameplay.
A wide range of vehicles is showcased during the release date trailer, such as the Bugatti Chiron, Citrown 2CV, Dodge Challenger, Aston Martin Vantage and Lancia Stratos.
Each car is meant to be ‘earned’ and upgraded after several long hours of gameplay. The overall aim to for one of two rival street racing gangs – the Streets or the Sharps – to become the preeminent force of the location and reach the top of the giant Solar Hotel.
“The game will receive major and regular updates, including a range of content and game modes that will be added to the initial experience,” said Nacon.
“TDUSC players can therefore enjoy different activities, cars and themed content based on how long they continue to play the game.”
