New Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown trailer hints at the possibilities

It’s been a little while since we last heard about NACON and Kylotonn’s Test Driver Unlimited Solar Crown, but with the release of a new trailer today, we are edging closer to seeing how the game is shaping up.

The Test Drive series of games has had a long and varied history, starting back in 1987 on the Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64 and MS-DOS. What many fans regard as the peak, however, arrived in 2006, with the open-world Test Drive Unlimited and a subsequent 2011 sequel.

Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown aims to continue the ‘Unlimited’ vein of games, where you would buy property, explore an island, find car and motorcycle dealerships and race rivals on the street. Today’s new information stresses that the new game will “remain faithful to the franchise while adding a wide range of new touches.”

The name for the game was first revealed during 2020’s NACON Connect stream, where the development team and core concepts were discussed.

You can watch new cinematic trailer for the game below.

In the footage, we can see the Aston Martin DB11 and the Range Rover Sport SVR. Both are powerful cars, and two rivals are seen selecting their rides from an assortment of car keys before revving up and racing out of a car park.

Whether or not the keyfobs are a teaser or not remains to be seen, but we can spot Ferrari, Audi, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini and Bugatti brands. The Steam pre-order page confirms Koenigsegg, Apollo and Dodge.

In the process it’s insinuated that there’s a gambling element where the cars are at stake, akin to pink slips. We’ll have to see how that plays out, but the game is confirmed to feature “dream cars, customisation, avatars, competition, open world, casino and style,” with more information coming in July 2021.

For now, this has wet our appetite. The game will be coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC (Epic and Steam), Xbox One, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch. A release date is yet to be announced.
