Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds features a colourful cast of playable characters from the Sonic universe, including the likes of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles alongside villains such as Dr. Eggman, Metal Sonic and Egg Pawn. Free updates will even let you race as characters outside the Sonic universe, from Hakune Miku to Persona 5’s Joker.
Every main character is unlocked from the start. Well, not quite. There’s one more special bonus character to unlock: Super Sonic. Here’s how to unlock Super Sonic in Sonic Racing CrossWorlds.
How to unlock Super Sonic in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
One of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds‘ unique mechanics is the rivals system. Before a race, you are assigned a rival racer, or you can choose one in the character selection screen. Rivals are more challenging to beat and taunt you throughout the race, with 23 to defeat in total.
To unlock Super Sonic as a playable character, you must defeat every rival. A rival defeat only counts if you finish above them in a four-race Grand Prix rather than an individual event. You don’t have to win first place overall, but must finish a Grand Prix with more points than your rival to beat them.

Rivals you have defeated have a yellow tick on the character selection screen. If you’re struggling to beat them, you can lower the difficulty of a rival by pressing R1 on PS5 to bring up the rival selection screen.
Once you’ve chosen your rival, press L1 to reduce the number of flame bars – one flame represents the easiest difficulty.

Defeating all 23 rivals will automatically unlock Super Sonic after the end credits. However, the gold superpowered hedgehog is only playable in Grand Prixs.
In the Sonic universe, Sonic the Hedgehog transforms into Super Sonic by combining the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds, giving him special abilities.
