While Romain Grojean will seek to establish himself in IndyCar this season, his esports activities also continue to grow, as his squad will now manage the Uralkali Haas F1 Team Esports team.
R8G Esports was founded by the former Formula 1 driver last year and has since grown to employ 17 esports professionals that compete in virtual championships such as the GT Pro Series, FIA GT Sport, Formula E: Accelerate and various iRacing events, while Romain himself recently took part in the RCCO World eX Championship.
The 2021 F1 Esports Pro Series will begin later this year, and now R8G Esports will be responsible for the Haas F1 Team’s entry.
“For me, being able to help Haas F1 in this field, and going racing together – well, it’s a great story. Obviously, it’s a cool continuation of what we built together,” said the ten-time F1 podium finisher.
Drivers will be announced later this year, as will the F1 Esports Pro Series calendar and format. Following on from another successful Virtual Grand Prix series – which Haas won – and the current Challengers series, this news further highlights how seriously Formula 1 is taking virtual racing.
Oh, and there’s a quote from everyone’s favourite reality TV star, Guenther Steiner.
“It’s an important step up for us in terms of our involvement from previous seasons.” Cheers, Guenther. I’m assuming the PR department removed the f-bombs…
We’ll keep you up to date with the F1 Esports Pro Series as and when more announcements happen.
