Michel was first across the line in a high-intensity second round, holding on despite a race restart and rivals closing in on the final lap.

Angelo Michel has won the second round of the 2024/25 Racing Unleashed Esports Racer League and with it a tidy CHF 3,000 prize.

The unique sim racing competition that sees drivers compete in person on Racing Unleashed’s motion simulators – connected online from various lounges – visited a virtual Monza for its most recent event.

The German driver was on pole position ahead of multiple Gran Turismo World Series champion Coque Lopez. Christoph Holstein would line up third, ahead of Sebastian Hirsch.

Championship leader, and Round 1 victor, Alejandro Sánchez, was all the way down in 10th on the grid, one place behind reigning champion Michal Šmídl – the line-up taking the top 10 championship standings and reversing them.

Into the Prima Variante on the first of 22 laps, Michel and Lopez ran side-by-side, with the Spaniard losing out and hopping over the sausage kerbs.

Behind, at the second chicane, several cars collided. David Cid, Nico Fahland and Agustin Torlaschi all lost out.

Lopez would start to drift away from podium contention, overtaken by Hirsch on the second lap and down to fourth by lap seven, dicing with Christoph Holstein. That was until the race winner last season dropped it coming out of Ascari.

Then came a brief pause to proceedings and the push-to-pass allocation reset to eight for all.

At the rolling resumption, with 13 laps left to run, Michel continued to pull away following a collision behind following a confusing procedure.

Second-placed Sebastian Hirsch found the barriers, dropping to last, while Lopez ended up ninth by the second chicane.

Siro Zambra, meanwhile, capitalised to climb into second. It wouldn’t last long, however, as a charging Smidl rose through the ranks, following a rejuvenated Sánchez by and onto the podium.

In the closing stages, 12th through to 19th were closely stacked and it all came tumbling down on the penultimate lap. Several cars hit each other in between the Seconda Variante and the first Lesmo – Maranon and Cid ended up facing the wrong way.

Racing Unleashed Challenger Monza 2024

Up front, however, despite a concerted effort by this season’s first race winner, Michel would hold on and win for himself and the Munich lounge.

In the supporting Challenger League, for slower cars and less prize money, Nikolaj Rogivue won, ahead of Adrian Gomez and Unai Maroto.

The next round of both championships is on 14th December 2024, with the venue to be unveiled in the days prior.
