Cooper Webster will take a 40-point championship lead into the final two races of the 2025 iRacing Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup, after a rain-affected Fuji round fraught with drama.

He took victory in race one before a couple of smart overtakes, and a considerable amount of team support, confirmed his points lead going into Le Mans.

Race 1

This round’s qualifying session confirmed that the championship race was really about three drivers, as Jordan Caruso, Webster and Mitchell deJong all made the top three.

In the difficult, rainy conditions, it was the championship leader going backwards, though, and deJong followed his teammate through into second on the first lap.

A battle between Gustavo Ariel and Tristan Iglesias, who himself wasn’t that far away in the championship, meant those three got clear of the rest of the field, bringing reigning champion Sebastian Job with them. It was all about who would make a mistake in these tricky conditions, and on lap six, it would be deJong, who outbraked himself into turn one.

This promoted Webster into a position to make a pass on Jordan Caruso, potentially season-defining, considering the points situation between the two. It was aggressive, and not without contact, but certainly a fair overtake that gave Webster a hugely important lead, even more so because Caruso slipped to fourth in the action.

On the front straight, just one lap later, Redline driver Ariel made a huge lunge down the inside of Caruso, putting deJong just on the outside of him in a tight three-wide moment. They came together, DeJong was worse off by some way, dropping all the way down to 10th with too little time to get back into the top eight, where the reverse grid for race two is taken from.

Caruso didn’t gain anything either, as he passed deJong on the inside but was also passed by Ariel, who gained two places. This gave Redline a 1-2-3 in race one, but more importantly, gave Webster an even greater points lead before race two.

Race 2

Starting eighth, race two didn’t begin perfectly for Webster, as he had lost a place while Caruso was already up to fourth after lap one. However, simple passes on former championship contender Alejandro Sánchez, and current outsider Iglesias, rescued a seventh-place finish and a decent point score for the round.

Caruso, meanwhile, had Redline team members all around him towards the front. Sensing the impending danger, Caruso had to make a low percentage move on an impossibly tight line into turn one on Sam Kuitert as Job put pressure on from behind.

On a drying, but still damp track, this tight line gave the 2023 champion much less braking performance than expected, and he went extremely wide, allowing Job and Gustavo Ariel through.

With Webster’s steady gaining of positions, he secured a healthy, but still closable margin over Caruso going into the final round, with deJong effectively needing two wins at Le Mans to stand any chance.
