The cycle of a Gran Turismo 7 update is now nearly complete. We’ve had the teaser, the theories, the server maintenance notice and even the patch download.
But now, some of the content and extra features have been formally unveiled.
Let’s start with the cars, for Update 1.54, which will be active as of Thursday 21st November 2024 and weighing in at just over 32gb.
Five new cars
- Ford Escort RS Cosworth ’92
- Mercedes-Benz W 196 R ’55
- Porsche 911 Turbo S (992) ’20
- Porsche Mission X ’23
- Suzuki Jimny Sierra JC ’18
Porsche Mission X ’23
No, it wasn’t the Ferrari F80 – although Polyphony Digital nearly caught us out with that one. Instead, this is last year’s Porsche hypercar concept – which, if you believe the rumours, was lined up to be its next production pinnacle, although the world awaits a concrete confirmation.
It’s electric, so it’s set to be fast and based on the update trailer, emanates some sort of futuristic sound. But… would be better with a V10 in it, right?
Ford Escort RS Cosworth ’92
For people of a certain age, the Escort ‘Cossie’ was the zenith of hot hatches. It has a distinctive rear wing (which, despite several claims, no one is sure who designed it – Frank Stephenson or Ian Callum?), all-wheel-drive, a turbocharger and a propensity to be either crashed, modified or stolen.
This means a tidy one today is worth a small fortune. One sold for over £200,000…
Porsche 911 Turbo S (992) ’20
It’s another 911, this time from the 992 generation. Reasonably contemporary then, and with over 640bhp and four-wheel-drive, a rocketship. A bit bland, though, isn’t it? We’d take the GT3 RS that is already in GT7 over this all day, any day.
Suzuki Jimny Sierra JC ’18
Wait, this car is already in the game, right?
Yes. Also, no.
The cute off-roader currently playable is the ‘kei’ car variant, which means a narrower footprint and a 658cc engine. This ‘Sierra’ derivation has wider hips and a 1.5-litre engine and is the version commonly sold outside of Japan.
Mercedes-Benz W 196 R ’55
This is more like it; it’s a Formula 1 car.
Yes, it may be from the 1950s, but this grand prix legend can show some modern cars a few tricks still. Not safety, though. Definitely not that.
This was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio to take the 1955 drivers’ title, and Stirling Moss to a race victory that same year.
It has a furious eight-cylinder engine up front, and a ‘mono-posto’ layout. We expect this to be rather expensive in-game. As it should be with such heritage.
Gran Turismo Sophy expands
Another update, another two additions to the GT Sophy-compatible track roster.
This time it is Trial Mountain and Tokyo Expressway, East Clockwise specifically, as the game edges slowly, but surely, towards Sophy at all venues.
There will be a new ‘Extra Menu’, where a reward is paid out for owning three specific cars – this time, the Ferrari F40, Ferrari F50 and Ferrari Enzo.
In terms of on-track action, three more race events will become available:
- Jimny Cup, Grand Valley – South
- Porsche Cup – WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
- Race of Turbo Sportscars – Mount Panorama Circuit
Rotiform is a new brand of aftermarket wheels that will be added to the available selection, while Colorado scenes will be part of the Scapes photography mode.
That’s all we know so far, but we expect a full changelog tomorrow, 21st November, when the update goes live. It is still not yet known if this will include PS5 Pro-specific enhancements.
