The hype is ramping up for iRacing’s Season 1 2025 build, with the Massachusetts-based firm showcasing several pieces of new content fans can expect to see released tomorrow (10th December 2024).
However, the sim’s updated track debris system, subtitled ‘Debris Refresh’, has really caught our eye. In a comprehensive preview video, iRacing showcased gravel and dirt being dragged onto track surfaces and subsequently moved around by passing cars.
Although we’ve seen similar game mechanics in the likes of Automobilista 2 – with RaceRoom enhancing its dynamic track system tomorrow – we haven’t seen it with the same level of detail before.
The update will add new types of debris and refresh its appearance, with the main kicker being how it physically interacts with passing cars. Rubber marbles, dirt, dust, gravel and grass can all be deposited on a track’s surface before being gradually swept away by traffic.
Remarkably, when cars travel through affected areas they leave a trail of detritus and clear a dynamic path through the debris. A clean line develops quicker as more cars pass through, with debris collecting convincingly on their tyres.
How much debris is picked by the tyres is dependent on the wetness of the track surface, the debris type and the tyre compound fitted to your car, with a large build-up of track pollution contributing to lower grip levels.
It looks fantastic in motion, but there are bugs judging from the presentation, with debris patches developing in a staccato fashion. We’re sure this will continue to evolve over time, however.
