Developed by Serious Sim, Heading Out is a unique narrative driving game inspired by classic road movies like Vanishing Point aand Thelma and Louise. It launched last May as a PC exclusive, but PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S ports in development by Crunching Koala were announced in June with no release window. Â
Now, the console versions have a release date, and there’s not long to wait: Crunching Koala has confirmed that Heading Out will hit PS5 and Xbox Series X|S later this month on 29th August.
Heading Out sees you play as an outlaw known as the Interstate Jackalope heading across America in a muscle car, choosing the route to try and escape your fear. The white muscle is inspired by a 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T, the hero car in Vanishing Point. More cars are unlocked as you complete each story act.

Along the way, you’ll encounter colourful characters, triggering scenarios where you’ll need to make difficult choices that affect the narrative, as well as your reputation and wanted level. In another nod to Vanishing Point, radio hosts will react to your actions.
Other scenarios see you race random rivals to win money or outrun the police if you get caught speeding. There are also light resource management elements, such as maintaining your car’s condition and fuel. Since the game is roguelike, your journey restarts if you wreck your car or run out of fuel.
What also makes Heading Out unique is its presentation. Reminiscent of Sin City, the stylish visuals are black and white with splashes of colour, with the narrative presented in visual novel-style cut scenes.
Pricing details for the console versions have yet to be confirmed. However, the Steam version retails for £16.49/$19.99, but is currently reduced to £9.89/$11.99 with a 40% discount.
