Mario Kart World has attracted controversy for its astronomical retail price. When it launches on 5th June alongside the Switch 2 console, the open-world racer will cost a whopping £66.99 / $79.99 / €79.99 – or £74.99 / $89.99 / €89.99 if you want a physical cart.
Nintendo has defended this, saying that the amount of content in the open-world racer justifies the higher price. Nevertheless, it hasn’t gone down well with the community, with Mario Kart World costing more than triple-A PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S titles.
However, there is a cheaper racing game launching alongside the Switch 2: Fast Fusion.
Briefly shown during the Switch 2’s reveal presentation, Fast Fusion is a futuristic racer inspired by F-Zero. This is a new entry in the Fast racing series with new mechanics rather than a remaster of the last game, Fast RMX. A new fusion mechanic lets you create “hundreds of improved racing machines” by combining vehicles into new ones with improved stats.

With blisteringly fast racing and 4K graphics, it promises to be a showpiece for the Switch 2. Developer Shin’en Multimedia describes it as the “fastest antigrav racing game you may have ever experienced.”
Now, the developer has confirmed Fast Fusion will cost £13.49 / $14.99 / €14,99, with pre-orders now live on the Nintendo eShop. Although it obviously won’t match Mario Kart World’s scope and is a lower-budget game, its low launch price could make Fast Fusion an essential purchase for futuristic racing fans when the Switch 2 launches.
The sequel is even cheaper than its predecessor, with Fast RMX retailing for £16.99 / $19.99. Released in 2017, it was also a launch title for the original Nintendo Switch in 2017.
A short trailer also gives a first look at the game’s anti-gravity racing, science-fiction-style tracks and weather effects, including a raging tornado.
A physical release is yet to be confirmed, although the Fast RMX and the Wii U’s Fast Racing Neo received physical copies after launching digitally.
Incidentally, F-Zero GX, the series that inspired Fast Fusion, will also be playable at launch for those who have a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription alongside a catalogue of retro GameCube games.
