The covers have come off the official Formula 1 game for the 2025 season, EA SPORTS F1 25, and welcome changes arrive alongside the roster update.

These include the first notable overhaul to the popular My Team managerial mode in five years, the return of the fictional Braking Point story and accurate laser-scanned venues.

It will continue to use the existing Ego game engine technology to release on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S 30th May 2025.

A new My Team

Alongside every driver, team, livery and track from the real-world season, EA claims that it was thoroughly updated the My Team game mode, first introduced in 2020.

Here, you take control of a fictional race team of your creation, historically being a driver-manager for one of the seats. You recruit a team-mate, making key decisions on car development.

Most of those fundamentals are set to remain, although it seems as if you can now select either of your two drivers to race as before every round. This could possibly lead to interesting internecine dynamics.

Braking Point returns

Braking Point 3 F1 25

This will mark the third (arguably fourth after a brief debut in F1 2019) installment of the Braking Point story mode for the series.

Here, you follow the Butler family’s plight through a mixture of cutscenes and gameplay scenarios. Last time out was focused on antagonist Devon Butler racing against upcoming Aiden Jackson and his sister Callie Mayer, all the while trying to impress father and team-funder Davidoff Butler.

The Konnersport team, and thus these characters, return alongside an increased number of difficulty options as they battle through “a dramatic event.”

Laser-scanned tracks, reverse layouts

One critique of former F1 games has been the accuracy of some tracks. They tend to look recognisable, but kerbing, bumps and corner radii can vary from the real world.

That should change with F1 25, thanks to the use of LIDAR technology to capture data – a laser scanning technique normally reserved for high-end simulation platforms such as Assetto Corsa and iRacing.

According to EA, “several” (but crucially, not all) venues will receive the treatment, which will also include enhancements to trackside surroundings. Which circuits will be updated is yet to be unveiled.

F1 25 reverse

Some tracks will also be playable in reverse, presumably helping online communities experience newer venues, without producing all-new tracks. Silverstone, Red Bull Ring and Zandvoort have been spotted in the game’s trailer.

F1 movie tie-in

An additional game mode will be present to replicate elements of the upcoming Joseph Kosinski theatrical release, F1.

Little is known about the included content here, but it is assumed that players will be able to reenact scenes, played out in the film by drivers Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) and Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris). F1 hits cinemas in June, and these APXGP team chapters will only be for those who pre-order the Iconic Edition.

Release date and no older consoles

Little is mentioned about potential multiplayer changes, any potential tweaks to the updated Driver Career mode seen in last year’s F1 24 or the maligned F1 World area. Talk of vehicle handling changes, a divisive element for its predecessor, is also omitted for now.

EA SPORTS F1 25 will be released on 30th May 2025, with early access starting on 27th May for those who pre-order the Iconic Edition. Crucially, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will not be created. All pre-orders of the base edition will receive an “F1 World Starter Pack” plus 5,000 PitCoin.

An Iconic Edition will be available for an extra fee, and includes a “multitude of perks linked to cover star Lewis Hamilton and the film F1” and 2025 season liveries for use in F1 24 Time Trial mode. Those in the US also receive one month of F1 TV PRO.
