Expeditions: A MudRunner Game is a 2024 physics-based off-roader

After SnowRunner received a third-year of support and optional downloadable content, many fans started to wonder what developer Saber Interactive would work on next – the answer is Expeditions: A MudRunner Game.

Unveiled today, 22nd August 2023 during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event, the initial trailer shows that physics-based realising off-road driving is still at the core. But this time, less about the giant trucks of its past title, but more about nimble 4x4s. So far, at least.

Now, while SnowRunner could be boiled down into an off-road fetch-quests simulator, and a very pretty and engaging one too, Expeditions is all about scientific discovery.

For example, during the initial showcase, one was fitted with a metal detector, and there was also what appeared to be a fresh type of winch and an echo sounder to find underwater objects. We could imagine that tools like these open up further gameplay mechanic possibilities.

Drones are used, for example, to scout out the location, which is said to include both arid deserts and rugged forests.

Of course, all of these items can be purchased and seemingly upgraded. Your ‘base’ must be managed, and your vehicles appear to be customisable. The need to manage personnel and build your camp takes resource management to new levels.

A release date for Expeditions: A MudRunner Game has not been set, but 2024 has been provided as a window. It will be coming to PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
