Shop sim racing equipment
Yes, you read that title correctly. A Prodrive Ford Mondeo from the British Touring Car Championship is currently listed for auction and it’s probably the most impressive touring car simulator in the world.
Currently listed on the Iconic Auctioneers website, the 1999-spec Ford Mondeo was a spare chassis used as a simulator for a Millennium Dome show in 2000. It’s currently set up to play TOCA Touring Car Championship on the PlayStation via a rather crude-looking monitor plopped in front of the windscreen, but with a few modifications could easily suit modern sim racing equipment.

Although the simulator aspect is a little incongruous, there’s no doubting the lineage of the car: check out all that carbon fibre!
Ford and Prodrive allegedly spent around $15 million to secure the 2000 BTCC Drivers’ and Teams’ championships, with the Mondeo considered to be the ultimate Super Touring racer. Although this isn’t one of the dominant 2000 cars, it still represents a significant piece of BTCC history given what was to come 12 months later.
And the best bit? It’s a steal, with a guide price of £10-12k.

Too good to be true?
If that seems too good to be true, bear in mind that the expensive parts of the car, namely its engine and gearbox, are not included, while its exterior looks rather shabby thanks to a broken rear bumper, several large scratches and missing trim pieces.
Basically what it would look like after your average Super Touring-era BTCC race, then.

It’s also unknown whether chassis number PR-ST/F-2K-01 was ever driven in anger by drivers Anthony Reid and Rickard Rydell in period, but it has been signed by Ford’s 2000 Drivers’ champion Alain Menu, at least.

I’m off to look down the back of the sofa…
