THQ Nordic has surprisingly announced that a sequel to the immensely popular Wreckfest is just around the corner (upside down and on fire, probably).
Wreckfest 2 was unveiled during tonight’s (2nd August 2024) THQ Nordic Showcase 2024, with a one-and-half-minute video showing a lot of Days of Thunder-style dialogue. But instead of Robert Duvall caressing a stock car we have a furious driver blitzing his way through a field of similar vehicles in a scrapyard.
And he talks! Which may or may not indicate a nod to the game’s ‘entirely reimagined career mode’.
Very little information is known about the title at this early stage but developer Bugbear has indicated Wreckfest 2 will have ‘higher crash fidelity, a deeper armor and damage system, [and] more intricate component damage simulation’. Also promised are overhauled physics and more customisation tools, which are sure to make the online experience more fun (based on Wreckfest’s selection of hilarious props, anyway).
The FlatOut series developer has also claimed it has been working on ‘rebuilding [Wreckfest 2’s] true-to-life physics simulation engine to take full advantage of modern hardware,’ which is a surprising statement given the Finnish studio will release the game on old-gen (and current-gen) consoles.
In terms of multiplayer, a comprehensive, skill-based multiplayer system will be put in place ahead of release, with Wreckfest fans able to race in a brand-new two-player local split-screen mode. Sadly, there has been no mention of VR compatibility… Days of Chunder, indeed.
Wreckfest 2 is available to Wishlist on Steam (PC) now, with PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch versions all slated for release.

Update – The official Wreckfest 2 website lists PS4, Xbox One and Switch (image below), however, Traxion has confirmed with THQ Nordic that it is indeed a mistake, and the game will only be arriving on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
