Takuma Miyazono has won the latest Gran Turismo World Series Nations Cup round in Singapore.

It came after the Japanese driver cleverly reverse-engineered his strategy, pitting earlier than most initially and then elongating a middle stint. It meant that he pitted for the final time on the penultimate lap around the Circuit de Sainte-Croix track and had to complete only one lap on the hard compound rubber.

This was at odds with Pol Urra’s approach, which saw the Spanish driver end the race on quicker soft tyres, but initially several places (and seconds) behind the leader.

It culminated in a move at the final corner on the last lap. Miyazono defended on the inside, Urra tried to go around the outside before being eased wide and into the wall, dropping to third.

Compatriots Jose Serrano and Samuel Moreno Baeza finished second and fourth, respectively, and were also caught up in the contentious move.

France’s Kylian Drumont seemed to hold the early advantage, winning the qualifying race around the new Sugo venue, which will be added to the public Gran Turismo 7 build on 15th October.

That meant he took pole for the main race and led the field for the first stint. He dropped back in the pack slightly after the first pitstop, before making contact with Valerio Gallo and Kaj de Bruin. He was handed a two-second penalty, which dropped him out of contention.

Reigning champion Serrano, meanwhile, lost out following a costly self-inflicted spin in the middle stages.

As the race ended, the assembled crowd and drivers didn’t know the outcome of the stewards’ deliberation for several minutes before it was deemed fair and the result stood. Miyazono was the winner, even if he didn’t look sure of the result himself.

Earlier in the day, Daniel Solis won his first-ever Gran Turismo World Series race in the Manufacturers Cup event. The World Finals will decide both championships in Tokyo this December.
