Announced during last night’s PlayStation State of Play show, Twisted Metal III and Twisted Metal 4 will soon be playable on PlayStation 5 and 4 via the Classics Catalogue.

Originally released for the PlayStation in 1998 and 1999, respectively, Twisted Metal III and Twisted Metal 4 will be added to the PlayStation Classics Catalogue on 15th July.

Twisted Metal 3 and 4’s re-releases complete Twisted Metal’s mainline PS1 lineup, with the original vehiclar combat game and its sequel, Twisted Metal World Tour, also playable on PS5.

A PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, which costs £119.99 per year, is required to access the Classics Catalogue.

Other games from the Classics Catalogue, including Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal World Tour can also be purchased on the PlayStation Store separately, but it isn’t clear if this will be the case for Twisted Metal III and 4.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but most PS1 games are priced at £7.99 / $9.99 on the PlayStation Store.

Original series creator David Jaffe was not involved with Twisted Metal 3 and 4, which were instead helmed by 989 Studios and released exclusively in North America. The third and fourth entries were widely criticised for their poor controls, lacklustre level designs and cartoony character designs, marking a decline for the series.

The series returned to form with 2001’s Twisted Metal Black on PlayStation 2, with David Jaffe returning as Game Director, but has remained dormant since the PlayStation 3’s 2012 Twisted Metal reboot, with no signs of a revival.

Twisted Metal III and 4 joining the Classics Catalogue coincides with season 2 of the Twisted Metal TV adaptation starring Anthony Mackie, set to premiere on Peacock on 31st July.

An unannounced Twisted Metal live service reboot was reportedly in development for PlayStation 5 by UK studio Firesprite, but was cancelled in March as part of a round of layoffs at Sony, according to a now-deleted social media post by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.
