Tokyo Xtreme Racer’s full release delayed until September

Originally slated for a May version 1.0 release window, this has now been pushed back to “the end” of September to “meet fan expectations”

Tokyo Xtreme Racer’s full release delayed until September

The Tokyo Xtreme Racer reboot got the year 2025 off to a flying start, with generally positive feedback and strong-than-expected player numbers.

The reboot of the (very) long-running Japanese racing game sees players prowl the nighttime highways of Tokyo looking for rivals to race against. It was released in early access form in January, with the stated aim of “approximately four months” between then and a version 1.0 release.

Since then, a series of smaller updates have been delivered, including a photo mode and further customisation options. Now the early access run has been extended until “the end of Spetember 2025”.

According to developer Genki, this is because it has received a “tremendous amount of feedback” and will be revisiting the planned features. It also states that it will “spend more time developing and fine-tuning the game” while simultaneously provisioning an extra buffer to conclude licencing talks.

What to expect from Tokyo Xtreme Racer’s complete release

“We have been working hard at adding features and tuning the game but still face challenges in delivering an experience that meet fan expectations,” it said.

“We are near closing of all licensing discussions and are confident that we can implement everything into the full release.”

It has previously held a Reddit AMA, where it was confirmed that the final version 1.0 edition will include 200 extra rivals and some extra car brands, some from outside of Japan.

A release on consoles – the franchise has a deep affinity with PlayStation – is still “to be determined”.

In addition to that extra content, the following features and improvements are being worked on for release either before or in September:

Features planned for tuning

  • AI behavior
  • Polishing UI
  • Redesigning of perk and skill tree
  • Game balancing
  • Tuning of rival cars

Planned additional features

  • Steam achievements
  • Steam Record rankings
  • Replay functionality
  • Engine Conversion functionality
  • Dynamic Water and Oil Temperature functionality
  • Hard difficulty mode
