Despite being in Early Access and the first new entry in a franchise that’s been dormant for nearly 20 years, the Tokyo Xtreme Racer reboot has proved to be a surprise hit on Steam.

Unlike Assetto Corsa EVO’s limited Early Access release, Tokyo Xtreme Racer is feature-packed. Even at this early stage, the initial Early Access release features around half of the final game’s campaign, nearly 50 cars, over 120 rivals and in-depth customisation.

One absent feature, however, is VR. Genki hasn’t said virtual reality support is planned for the final game, but thanks to a third-party mod, Tokyo Xtreme Racer is already playable in VR.

As showcased by YouTuber HokiHoshi, Tokyo Xtreme Racer can be played in VR using UEVR, a downloadable mod that easily converts Unreal Game 4 and 5 games into VR. According to the YouTuber, Tokyo Xtreme Racer works “flawlessly” and is “completely playable” in VR with minimal setup.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer isn’t optimised for VR, so the experience isn’t perfect. Since the standard game doesn’t have a cockpit view, there are no working gauges or steering wheel animations, and the interior is blacked out. Driver names above rival cars also float in the wrong place.

Other than that, there are no obvious issues. When you’re not hurtling down the highway, the entire game works in VR, whether you’re viewing cars in garages or visiting parking areas.

If you have a VR headset and a capable PC, racing rivals and cruising the Tokyo Expressway in VR looks incredibly immersive. Your experience may vary depending on your PC specification, so you may need to lower the graphics settings to get the game running optimally in VR.

With some tweaking, HokiHoshi’s video shows that Tokyo Xtreme Racer can run surprisingly smoothly in VR. Let’s hope it encourages Genki to add official VR support.
