Star Wars Episode I: Racer joins Xbox Games With Gold in May

Microsoft Xbox announced on Thursday that two games would be joining their Games With Gold program during the month of May, and one of them is an absolute classic, yet futuristic one in the racing game sphere.

Hoa, which is not a racing game, will be available from the 16th of May to the 15th of June. The game we care about is Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, and that will join that service starting 1st May.

This is actually a game from my childhood, possibly even released before some of the best sim racing esports drivers were even born! Star Wars Episode 1 Racer launched on Windows PC and the Nintendo 64 back in May of 1999, with it later coming to the Game Boy Color in December of the same year.

It’s been re-released in recent years, this Xbox version releasing back in October of 2020. While it looks to have higher definition, be assured that there hasn’t been much, if anything done to the actual game itself besides that. Think other upscaled retro games.

This particular title comes straight out of the film from 1997, The Phantom Menace. The film portrays a young Anakin Skywalker, and while he was a child on Tatooine, he competed in what is known as Pod Racing. Truth be told, this could be considered a predecessor to many futuristic racing games we know and love today.

Outside of this Games For Gold, the title costs $14.99 to own it on Xbox One. If you are currently a subscriber to Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass Ultimate, this game will be included when the calendar flips over to the first of May.

What do you think about this nostalgic addition to the Xbox Games With Gold fold? Have you tried this re-release yet? Let us know in the comments!
