2025 is shaping up to be a standout year for kart racers. After Mario Kart World launched alongside the Switch 2 in June, Sonic is gearing up to return to the kart racing scene in September with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
A sequel to 2019’s Team Sonic Racing, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will mark the return of transforming vehicles last seen in Sonic & All Stars Racing: Transformed, allowing players to switch between land, sea and air vehicles.
It also introduces ‘travel rings’ where you can warp between different worlds, similar to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
Now, Sega has released a new trailer showcasing Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ extensive vehicle customisation.
Players will be able to mix and match different racers, vehicles, vehicle parts and gadgets to create unique combinations. With over 40 vehicles, 70+ gadgets and more than 100 vehicle parts and decals, Sega claims there are “over 70,000” possible combinations.
Along with the transforming vehicles and warp rings, this should help Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds stand out from its chief competitor, as customisation was pared back in Mario Kart World. Whereas Mario Kart 8 Deluxe lets you swap vehicle parts, you can only change vehicles and character costumes in Mario Kart World.
The trailer shows how players can customise vehicles by swapping body parts, adding decals and changing the paint colour. Gadgets can also be combined to create more powerful weapons.
The trailer shows Knuckles attack opponents with a boxing glove-style ‘Rocket Punch,’ which can be levelled up to create a giant version or combined with an ‘Attack Bounty’ to earn extra coins when attacking opponents.

Alongside the customisation, Sega has confirmed the Nintendo Switch 2 version will launch after other platforms.
The digital version will be released in “holiday 2025,” with prices starting at £64.99 for the Standard Edition and £79.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition, followed by a physical version in early 2026. Mercifully, unlike most third-party Switch 2 titles, the full game will be on the cartridge, rather than a game-key card that requires a download.
On other platforms, Sonic Racing: Crossworlds will launch on 25th September 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Those who purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition will get early access from 22nd September.
