Gravitom looks set to provide a revolutionary way of replicating high G-forces in sim racing.
The project, which sees legendary sim racing physics developer Aristotelis Vasilakos act as an investor and strategic adviser, uses high-tech software and VR to produce forces of up to 3G.
Founded by Ales and Matic Zajc, two Gravitom simulators will be at this year’s SimRacing Expo, aiming to promote the unique driver training potential of their system, which utilises a truly visceral approach that doesn’t move the rig like traditional motion simulators – it moves the driver.
Another way in which the Gravitom differs from traditional motion platforms is that it can produce these forces for a sustained period, better simulating the effects of driving a real racecar, allowing drivers to train their neck muscles, eye coordination and head stability without requiring a gruelling gym session.
SimRacing Expo
SimRacing Expo will be the first public showing for the technology, with the system using real-time telemetry data to simulate driver forces with a latency of just 1 ms. Gravitom will run both Assetto Corsa Competizione and Le Mans Ultimate at the Expo, but more sims will be added over time as integration standards are met.
Constructed from carbon steel and other high-grade metals, Gravitom implements its feedback via a “direct force-application system”, which only works with VR headsets.
“For the brain and body to fully accept the experience, visual perception and physical forces must be perfectly aligned,” stated Vasilakos. “Key to this is the extremely low latency, continuous force application and physics; visuals and forces real-time alignment, which combined ensure complete immersion and eliminate motion sickness,” he explained.
Those behind the Gravitom project aim to have around 5-10 professional drivers and teams to help refine the technology before engaging in a commercial partnership with a manufacturer at the very top level of motorsport. A consumer version will be considered once this goal has been achieved.
Once again taking place in Messe Dortmund, Germany, the 2025 SimRacing Expo runs between the 17th and 19th of October, and it’s shaping up to be the biggest yet, thanks to a host of world-class exhibitors including iRacing Studios, Simucube, Project Motor Racing, Moza and Thrustmaster.
