The GT Academy programme turned sim racing competitors into real-world motorsport stars. Mardenborough was the third winner of the competition, becoming a factory Nissan driver.
The picture follows a version of his path, from bedroom Gran Turismo driver to competitors at the 24 Hours of Le Mans – and if this video is anything to go by, via a police chase in a Volkswagen Corrado VR6…
But, it seems, based on the most recent trailer, it doesn’t skirt around the horrific accident while behind the wheel of a GT-R GT3 eight years ago. Heading over the rise at Flugplatz, the car took off, flying through the air and unfortunately landing in a spectator area.
Since then, the hump has been lowered somewhat to help prevent such an incident from happening again, but on that day one visitor succumbed to their injuries.
The final spot ahead of the movie’s release also showcases how it will bring the gaming element to life, with cars being ‘built’ around the central character in an engaging visual representation of how seriously sim racing is taken.
Directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9), it’s set for release on 11th August 2023.
