Gran Turismo movie delayed in US, Europe and UK stay on track

The new date for the Gran Turismo Movie release is 25th August 2023 in the USA. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this is due to the inability of Sony to use actors Orlando Bloom and David Harbour to promote the upcoming Jann Mardenborough biopic.

“The stars can’t promote the film but the audience can,” said a Sony spokesperson.

The two-week delay, originally slated for 11th August 2023, is in the midst of a SAG-AFTRA strike. The media professional labour union is disputing the residual value of work and the use of artificial intelligence with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

The film portrays the true story of a young Mardenborough, who won the in-game and reality television show GT Acedemy in its third season – becoming a motorsport competitor for Nissan.

The central character will be played by Archie Madekwe (Midsommar, Beau Is Afraid), with Bloom (The Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean) playing Nissan employee Danny Moore and Harbour (Stranger Things, Violent Night) Jack Slater, the team manager and personnel manager.

A second trailer was recently released, which showcased more of the UK gamer-turned-racing-driver’s formative years outside of competition and a recreation of a 2015 Nürburgring crash that resulted in the loss of life for a spectator.

The film will still release on 9th August in the UK, France, Belgium, Indonesia, Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands and the Philippines. The likes of Argentina, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Brazil and Hungary follow the next day, while those in Spain, South Africa and Canada can watch from the 11th.

The picture now also has a subtitle in its name. The full name is Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story.
