Cooper Webster took the main race victory in the iRacing Porsche Tag Heuer Esports Supercup at Thruxton as the world’s best start the busiest time of the season, a championship-deciding triple header.

Webster came in with the points lead, and after victory in race two, he maintained that over fellow Australian Jordan Caruso in a pair of races starved of overtaking.

The 2023 F4 Indian Champion had a 21-point lead at the start of the day, with Caruso his closest rival. While Mitchell deJong and Kevin Nielsen are also within 50 points of the pair, one would be forgiven for thinking this is now a two-horse race, especially after round five at the British circuit.

Race 1

Luke McKeown took pole, making it five pole-sitters in five rounds, and it was desperately needed too, if he is to insert himself into the championship conversation.

After a solid start and clean first chicane, he set about building a lead that he could hold over second-placed Caruso.

Behind, it wasn’t Webster’s best qualifying, but as the field cleaned out into single file, he was in the all-important eighth place, ensuring he would get pole for race two.

Add to that the fact that he had two teammates directly behind, he could feel secure that pole position was coming to him, and he could set about challenging deJong for seventh without concerns of losing eighth.

In the end, the Australian couldn’t really get near, and a slightly disappointing first race would lead to him losing the championship lead to Caruso by a point.

He would at least have a better race than teammate Sebastian Job, who firstly made a rare solo spin, before an overly aggressive overtake attempt into the final chicane put the #1 car into barriers, and almost certainly out of title contention.

Race 2

Webster would at least console himself with pole for the second race, which he started expertly. Caruso started seventh, but got caught in the middle of an awkward three-wide moment heading into the first chicane, losing him two places immediately.

Thruxton had already shown itself as being a circuit very difficult to pass on, and it showed again in race two. Caruso couldn’t get anywhere, and would only finish ninth, losing him 26 points to Webster, and almost completely restoring the deficit he suffered at the start of the day.

Webster, though, would scream with delight as he came out of the final corner to take victory, one which looked more comfortable from the outside than it likely actually was.

Those points he gained gives him the upper hand over Caruso in the title fight, although with Fuji and Le Mans to come – tracks where overtaking is much easier – it won’t be smooth sailing. It’s a quick turnaround for everybody now, as the business end of the season moves to Japan on Saturday.
