That title is quite the mouthful, but still staggering nonetheless. Mario Kart 8 Delxue, that first released in 2017 as a re-release of Mario Kart 8 from 2014, was the number one best-selling game in the UK physical game sales chart for the week ending 27th November 2021.
This is despite the kart-racing game already selling 38.74m copies to date. Who doesn’t have this game?
Well – it turns out, many. On the run-up to, and including, Black Friday, there were several Nintendo Switch bundles, predominately to shift units of the non-OLED hybrid console. If you’re new to the Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the default choice. It’s fun, accessible, includes off and online multiplayer and can be taken seriously if that’s your bag too.
So, just when you thought we’d reached peak Mario kart sales – another milestone has been broken. Other racing games in the sales charts this week include Forza Horizon 5 in 19th, Hot Wheels Unleashed at 22nd and F1 2021 in 25th.
Which poses a bigger question – when will someone other than Nintendo make a cash cow kart racing game and where is Mario Kart 9?
